The New York Giants’ head coaching search is about to kick up in high gear, as they seek a replacement for Brian Daboll.

With a promising young core and an early 2026 NFL Draft pick, New York appears to be the best available job for candidates. Uniquely, this cycle could feature a large number of recently fired head coaches who have produced a high level. Hiring a coach with prior head-coaching success appears to be the Giants’ best option, as they’ve failed multiple times with coordinators.

ESPN NFL insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano published a piece on Wednesday morning that provided key updates on the upcoming coaching carousel days before Black Monday. And Fowler dropped an unexpected nugget on a coach who could be a perfect fit for the Giants.

Browns HC Kevin Stefanski is a name to watch for the Giants

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has been dealt a brutal hand over the last few seasons. An awful trade for Deshaun Watson put the franchise in roster hell, as they couldn’t find a viable quarterback to run his offense. Despite this, he somehow led the Browns to the playoffs in 2023 with an aging Joe Flacco at quarterback.

According to Fowler, Stefanski would fit well in New York.

“Stefanski might be the strongest retread candidate in the eyes of many. The Giants would be an ideal fit,” Fowler stated in his intel piece. “And trades of any kind are never off the table in Cleveland, but it’d be tricky trying to trade a coach who’s 7-26 over the past two years.

Stefanski’s overall record as a head coach isn’t impressive, with a 44-56 mark through six seasons in Cleveland. However, he has won a playoff game and reached the playoffs twice in 2020 and 2023. If we add the context of the Watson trade and the ownership meddling that forced it, Stefanski has been faced with an uphill battle in trying to fix the Browns.

A lot of what Stefanski seeks to do offensively could work well with the Giants’ core. From 2020 to 2022, the Browns were top 10 in rushing yards in the NFL thanks to hard-nosed running by Nick Chubb. A lot of that can be replicated with Cam Skattebo.

After trading away Baker Mayfield, the Browns’ offense completely tanked, so the vision of developing Cleveland’s offense never actualized. Jaxson Dart would ultimately be the most physically talented quarterback he’s had the chance to work with.

Stefanski isn’t the best retread option in my eyes if John Harbaugh or Mike Tomlin became available. However, if he’s fired on Monday and neither the Steelers nor Ravens make a move, he would be at the top of the candidates list. Interestingly, Fowler did drop another name that should catch Giants fans’ attention: Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

“He’s part of the cluster of strong defensive-minded candidates this cycle. He seems to have some traction in New York, too,” Fowler shared, “I’ve heard his name linked to the Giants job a few times in my calls over the past week, and I expect him to be on their list. Hafley is also a geographical fit as a Montvale, New Jersey, native.”

I’ve been an aggressive advocate for Hafley, given his ties to New York and northern New Jersey. If they choose to go with a coordinator, he should be their first choice.

It’ll be interesting to see who they go with as their next head coach, with the list of potential options now growing.
