The New York Giants made a bit of a gamble earlier this offseason by trading for tight end Darren Waller.
New York sent a third-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for the former Georgia Tech standout.
Waller is a former Pro Bowler who has seen his production take a hit over the last two years amid multiple injuries.
The Giants are betting on Waller returning to the Pro Bowl form that he showed in 2019 and 2020 when he went over 1,100 receiving yards in consecutive seasons.
Former Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski, a future Hall of Fame tight end, thinks the Giants were wise to trade for Waller.
Gronk said this week on "Up and Adams" that he thinks Waller will be a Pro Bowler in 2023.
"This year I believe he’s going to come back and he’s going to be a Pro Bowl-caliber type player," said Gronkowski while discussing Waller.
Gronk, who played under Giants head coach Brian Daboll with the New England Patriots, thinks Waller landed in an ideal situation to utilize his skillset. Gronkowski noted that Daboll loves to use tight ends in his offense — which is why is one of the reasons why he thinks Waller will have a bounceback year in New York.
Waller is still just 30 years old (three years younger than Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce), so he still has plenty left in the tank.
All Waller needs to do is stay healthy. If he can play a full season for the first time since 2020, I have a strong feeling that Gronk's Pro Bowl prediction will come true. And the Giants will look brilliant for sending a third-rounder to the Raiders for the talented tight end.
