Giants 2025 Initial 53-man Roster: Multiple preseason standouts and fan favorites released by New York
The New York Giants have officially announced their initial 53-man roster ahead of the 2025 NFL season, and there were a number of surprises
The New York Giants have officially announced who made their initial 53-man roster before the start of the 2025 NFL season. With several surprise moves to release training camp standouts, let’s take a look at the squad that will be suiting up this year.
Quarterback (3)
IN: Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart
The skinny: We sadly knew this would be the outcome for the quarterback room at the beginning of training camp. The biggest question for the entire roster is how the quarterback shuffle will work between Dart, Wilson, and Winston. Knowing Wilson is the starter, whether Dart or Winston gets to dress needs to be addressed.
Running Back (3)
IN: Tyrone Tracy, Cam Skattebo, Devin Singletary
The skinny: It was quite surprising to see Miller not make the final roster, considering the role he was establishing on special teams. Even without Miller, the Giants have a solid and well-rounded unit with different athletic profiles for different situations.
Wide Receiver (6)
IN: Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt, Beaux Collins, Gunner Olszewski
The skinny: Two of the bigger surprises of the final cuts were Washington and Smith-Marsette. Washington was trending down heavily, but had a fantastic start to training camp. Smith-Marsette was an underrated weapon as the Giants’ return man last year and appeared to be better equipped to fill in as a receiver if needed compared to Olszewski.
A fantastic story from the WR room is the UDFA Collins out of Notre Dame. His size and effort showed in practice and in all three preseason games. He could be a potential piece for the Giants to develop this season.
Tight End (4)
IN: Theo Johnson, Daniel Bellinger, Chris Manhertz, Thomas Fidone II
The skinny: Dulcich was on a tear as the top red-zone target throughout the preseason. That wasn’t enough for him to secure a spot as the youth of Fidone II presented more value.
Overall, the presence of four tight ends strongly indicates that the Giants intend to lean on their running game and tight ends this season.
Offensive Line (10)
IN: Andrew Thomas, John Michael Schmitz Jr., Jon Runyan, Greg Van Roten, Jermaine Eluemunor, James Hudson III, Evan Neal, Marcus Mbow, Austin Schlottman, Aaron Stinnie
The skinny: The offensive line was one of the more predictable position groups, so there were definitely no shocks here. The most intriguing talking point is whether Mbow’s flashes were enough for him to earn the swing tackle role over Hudson III on the depth chart.
Neal’s presence on this roster is a technicality at this point. Because they’re on the hook for paying him so much money, it’s financially not worth moving on from a player that likely won’t contribute at all this season.
Additionally, Ezeudu was listed as injured and designated to return. Once he’s available and healthy, he’ll likely swap in for Stinnie.
Defensive Tackle (6)
IN: Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Dexter Lawrence II, Roy Robertson-Harris, Darius Alexander, D.J. Davidson, Chauncey Golston
The skinny: Chatman’s role as the team’s fullback made him un-cuttable. However, the stark difference in size between him and Davidson was enough for the Giants to move on from him. Considering Lawrence has had recent injury issues, having a massive body as his backup is essential.
EDGE (3)
IN: Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter
The skinny: EDGE was another predictable position group. It would have taken an injury or a miracle to crack the most talented position group on the team.
Linebacker (5)
IN: Bobby Okereke, Darius Muasau, Micah McFadden, Chris Board, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
The skinny: Outside of Okereke and McFadden’s reliability, the Giants value Board and Muasau’s depth. That made it an uphill battle for the linebackers who were cut.
Flannigan-Fowles did enough to outperform other players who were scrapping for special team roles. Keeping a fifth linebacker doesn’t typically make sense, but it does in this circumstance.
Cornerback (7)
IN: Paulson Adebo, Deonte Banks, Cor’Dale Flott, Dru Phillips, Art Green, Korie Black, Nic Jones
The skinny: Cornerback is another position group where the Giants will be carrying an extra man for special teams. Black and Jones were not anticipated to be members of the final roster, but it appears they’ll be sticking around.
Safety (3)
IN: Tyler Nubin, Dane Belton, Jevon Holland
The skinny: Who would be the fourth safety was a huge question coming into today. Apparently, the Giants will be limiting the room to three instead. It doesn’t close the door for the Giants to claim a notable veteran later on.
Specialists (3)
IN: Case Kreiter, Jamie Gillan, Graham Gano
OUT: Jude McAtamney
The skinny: The only competition happening in this room was between Gano and McAtamney. While McAtamney showed potential, the Giants know what they’re getting with their reliable veteran in Gano.
