Giants 53 man roster projection post 2023 minicamp, NFL news

The New York Giants have now wrapped up the offseason. The next time they are on the grass in Jersey, it will be training camp.

So, with that in mind, today we're going to preview the 53 players that will make it out of camp and onto the active roster come September when the roster is lowered from the 90 current players.

Note: Players with single asterisk (*) are 2023 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) are 2023 undrafted free agents

Quarterback (2)

IN: Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor
OUT: Tommy Devito**

The skinny: The Giants could carry three QBs given the new emergency quarterback rule, but I doubt they will, meaning it's Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor holding down the room.

Running back (4)

IN: Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell, Eric Gray*
OUT: Jashuan Corbin, Chris Myarick

The skinny: Saquon is obviously the headliner here for multiple reasons but I believe he and the Giants will work out a long-term deal, hopefully well before the July 17th deadline.

Wide receiver (7)

IN: Jalin Hyatt* Parris Campbell, Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, Wan'Dale Robinson, Jamison Crowder, Sterling Shepard
OUT: Collin Johnson, Jaydon Mickens, Bryce Ford-Wheaton**, Kalil Pimpleton, Makai Polk, David Sills, Jeff Smith

The Skinny: Reports out of minicamp are that this group is fast and competitive. Those are two areas that the Giants needed to improve at, meaning the unit should be better this season. It's unusual that teams carry 7 wideouts but it's not unprecedented and I think New York could do that this year.

Tight end (4)

IN: Darren Waller, Daniel Bellinger, Lawrence Cager, Tommy Sweeney
OUT: Dre Miller, Ryan Jones**

The skinny: I don't expect any surprises here as my four projected "ins" form one of the more underrated groups of tight ends in the league in my opinion. Waller is known for being a "freak" athlete but Bellinger obviously wanted some notoriety himself, adding strength and muscle that was discovered during a viral OTA picture

Offensive line (9)

IN: Andrew Thomas, Evan Neal, John Michael Schmitz* Shane Lemieux, Mark Glowinski, Matt Peart, Joshua Ezeudu, Ben Bredeson, Tyre Phillips
OUT: Jack Anderson, Korey Cunningham, Wyatt Davis, Devery Hamilton, J. C. Hassenauer, Solomon Kindley, Marcus McKethan

The skinny:  The Giants are obviously content with the group of linemen they have assembled, as this group mirrors the one that we projected following the draft. Barring an injury or unforeseen circumstance, I expect the group to shake out as such.

Defensive line (6)

IN: Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams, A'Shawn Robinson, Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Ryder Anderson, D.J. Davidson
OUT: Vernon Butler, Jordon Riley* Kobe Smith

The skinny: This unit is not only talented at the top but deep at the backup spots following the late additions of Robinson and "Nacho" Roches. If healthy, I expect this group to make good on their goal of improving the run defense in 2023.

Outside linebacker (4)

IN: Kayvon Thibodeaux, Azeez Ojulari, Jihad Ward, Tomon Fox
OUT: Habakkuk Baldonado**, Elerson Smith, Oshane Ximines

The skinny: The Giants tinkered with Baldonado at outside backer as opposed to the defensive line during OTAs and minicamp as well as re-signing Ximines before the start of the offseason program. One of them could be in the mix if New York wants to keep an extra and potentially even up the amount of defensive linemen and edge players.

Inside linebacker (4)

IN: Bobby Okereke, Jarrad Davis, Cam Brown, Micah McFadden
OUT: Darian Beavers, Carter Coughlin, Dyontae Johnson**, Troy Brown**

The skinny: Similar to the line on the offensive side of the ball, the Giants are content with the inside backers as they have kept the same group for the duration of the offseason. That is obviously concerning when you consider Okereke is the only starting caliber backer, but we will have to trust the Don, Wink Martindale to work around it as he coordinates the defense.

Cornerback (6)

IN: Deonte Banks* Adoree' Jackson, Cor'Dale Flott, Darnay Holmes, Leonard Johnson, Tre Hawkins III*
OUT: Gemon Green**, Amani Oruwariye, Rodarius Williams, Zyon Gilbert, Aaron Robinson, Nick McCloud

The skinny: The Giants dodged a bullet during minicamp when starting CB Adoree' Jackson slipped and got up clutching his lower body but was seemingly fine. They will need both he and Banks to perform at a high level if they want to make good on returning to the playoffs.

Safety (4)

IN: Bobby McCain, Xavier McKinney, Gervarrius Owens*, Dane Belton
OUT: Terrell Burgess, Jason Pinnock, Trenton Thompson

The skinny: McCain and McKinney have been up to their ball-hawking ways this offseason, flying around and making plays on the football during OTAs and minicamp. Giants fans hope they can keep it up come September.

Special Teams (3)

IN: Jamie Gillan, Graham Gano, Casey Kreiter
OUT: Cameron Lyons**

The skinny: The Giants may have added Lyons as an undrafted free agent to "push" Kreiter, but considering they just re-signed Kreiter, it's more likely that Lyons is there to be a camp body.
