Since the New York Giants drafted Abdul Carter, the biggest headlines surrounding his name have been about his potential jersey number. Yes, you read that right.

Cam Ward was able to get permission from Warren Moon to wear his retired number one jersey with the Tennessee Titans, so Carter tried his hand at making something similar happen.

Available numbers Abdul Carter could wear for the Giants

Carter attempted to get permission from Giant legend Lawrence Taylor to wear his retired number 56. His request was denied, and after hearing Phil Simms share that he might allow Carter to wear his retired number 11 jersey, Carter attempted to land that as well. Simms shared that after speaking with his family, he realized they would prefer his jersey to remain retired, though. This sends Carter back to the drawing board yet again. So I dove into the numbers that Carter could choose instead, and don't worry, I didn't include Michael Strahan's 92 or Eli Manning's 10.

Numbers currently available

51

Picking 51 would be a unique way for Carter to combine his first two preferred jersey numbers, 56 and 11. Take the five from 56 and the one from 11; boom, you have 51. He would also be taking Taylor's advice of taking a number that doesn't have many notable former Giants who wore it in their history and making it notable himself.

12

If Carter would prefer to stay close to the 11 he wore in college, 12 is available on the Giants. And like 51, the team doesn't have a long list of former players who did the number justice. Lately, the players who have rocked the number for the team have been average starters or backups on the offensive side of the ball. The most notable in recent years would have to be TE Darren Waller in 2023.

Numbers he could potentially make a deal for

All jokes aside, I do feel for Carter because there aren't a lot of premium numbers for him to choose from for his rookie year, at least not before the team cuts down to 53 players. So, if he wanted to try and buy a number off a bench player or even someone who might not have a great shot of making the roster, it could make sense for all parties involved.

55: James Hudson III

55 is a clean number for a pass rusher to choose, but it is currently being worn by James Hudson III. Hudson has been with the team since 2021 after he was drafted in the fourth round. The most games he's started for the team came in 2023 with seven, and he logged three starts in 2024. I would assume he will make the roster again in 2025, but it might be worth it for him to gain some extra cash from Carter if he's willing to buy 55 off of him.

90: Elijah Garcia

90 is currently worn by Elijah Garcia, who began his career with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2022. After appearing in five games last year, he's entering his second season with the Giants and has even made three starts. The team did use a high pick on defensive tackle Darius Alexander, though, which makes his roster spot up in the air. So if Carter is interested in buying 90, maybe Garcis could move back to 71, the number he first wore with the Broncos when he joined the league.

95: Jordon Riley

Another number that Carter would look great in is 95. 95 is currently being worn by defensive lineman Jordon Riley, who the Giants drafted in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Like Garcia above, his spot on the roster is a bit in jeopardy after the team drafted Alexander. So, allowing Carter to buy his jersey number could put some extra money in his pocket just in case he doesn't make the roster, which would open the jersey up anyway.
