The New York Giants made a strong decision after yet another loss in Week 11 to begin this week. They're benching Daniel Jones, and Tommy DeVito is expected to step in as the team's starter at quarterback.

Now, Jones has even more competition to return to the field for New York this season, a possibility that seems to lessen by the day.

Giants sign another QB

New York has signed QB Tim Boyle to their practice squad.

Boyle has played in plenty of games during his time in the NFL. He's made 22 appearances, completing 62% of passes. He's also had twelve turnovers in that time, though. He is simply another option as a backup.

The Giants also added offensive lineman Tyre Phillips to the practice squad. Phillips joins New York for the third time in his pro career. He made ten appearances for them last season, too.

Daniel Jones

The choice to bench Daniel Jones signals a likely end to his time with the Giants. They have an avenue out of his contract this offseason, and the marriage between him and Brian Daboll simply never panned out.

Last year, the Giants gave Daniel Jones a four-year, $160 million extension. But there are no fully guarantees left — they were the signing bonus, the 2023 base salary, and the 2024 base salary. The Giants can, and probably will, easily move on from the deal next offseason. On the fifth day of the league 2025 year in March, $12 million of his salary would become guaranteed to motivate an early decision, and the release is the most likely outcome.

By adding Boyle, they have another experienced player in the QB room that they may turn to if both Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito struggle over the final couple months of the season.

The Giants are ready to move on from Jones and won't risk an injury mucking up the situation in the offseason regarding his deal.
