The New York Giants have been spenders this offseason, addressing deficiencies in their passing game, extending franchise pieces, and franchise-tagging superstars.

But one position group hasn't seen the same amount of love as even the front seven they play behind.

That's right, the cornerback room has seen little upgrading besides the influx of a versatile veteran in Bobby McCain. The Athletic thinks that may be a problem.

In a piece that examined the most important remaining needs for all 32 franchises, The Athletic went to their team beat reporters. Here's what Dan Duggan who covers the New York Giants said:

"It’s not surprising that the Giants didn’t spend big on a cornerback in free agency. It is surprising that their only addition has been Amani Oruwariye, especially with last season’s No. 2 corner, Fabian Moreau, still a free agent. Cornerback is a vital position in defensive coordinator Wink Martindale’s man-heavy scheme. The relative neglect thus far suggests the Giants are planning to address the position in the draft, potentially with their first-round pick."

Now I noted that the team added Bobby McCain, who is officially listed as a corner on their depth chart, but his best plays have come from the safety position, despite boasting a versatile skillset that can play all over the backend.

That clip displays the skillset McCain will bring to New York, while unintentionally reminding you of a bad era in the Giants history. (Sorry about the second part)

Now, just last week, we touched on the potential of signing a productive, but aging corner that is still on the market as of today, but no matter which way you slice it, the team is deficient at a critical factor position.

And while I would agree with Duggan that the Giants moves, (or lack thereof) in free agency when it comes to corners suggest a draft that will address the position, they only have one first-round pick and have also hinted at drafting a wide receiver there.

There's also the context of the draft to consider.

Picking at 25th overall, the lot of the true round-one graded corners will likely be gone at that point.

So the Giants are in a bit of a conundrum.

Select a receiver and create a full-fledged offensive attack, neglecting perhaps the most important piece on defense.

Or, reach for a corner that's likely a day two grade, and create more questions about the receiver room.

The life of an NFL GM.
