In late March, you see plenty of mock drafts around social media. You can even make your own from a plethora of different sites across the internet. For the New York Giants, many fans are probably mocking them one of two positions in the first round right now.
They're either giving them a wide receiver or an offensive lineman, particularly on the inside of the OL.
In Pro Football Focus' latest mock draft, Brad Spielberger did exactly that for the Giants.
He gave Wisconsin interior offensive lineman Joe Tippmann to New York at pick 29 once they moved back in the first round.
The Giants are a trendy spot for a wide receiver in mock drafts, but we went a different direction here after they missed out on the only true X receiver with first-round buzz in Quentin Johnston since they have plenty of playmakers in the slot.
Tippman didn’t test at the combine, but The Athletic's Bruce Feldman featured him on his “Freaks List.” Tippman has the size to play guard, as well, if that’s where a team views him long term, but regardless, the Giants get newly extended quarterback Daniel Jones some protection on the interior after adding extra draft capital. Tippman’s 88.3 run-blocking grade over the past two seasons ranks eighth among FBS centers, and he could fit in any scheme at the next level given his size and athleticism.
His explanation makes plenty of sense.
The Giants move down four spots in the first to supply themselves with more mid-round assets in a trade with the New Orleans Saints. Then, they address a major need on offense with the selection of Tippmann.
Tippmann projects as a center at the NFL level, but he could see time at guard as well. He has experience with that versatility, so New York could certainly use that.
Interior OL is a position that majorly lacks depth and experience for NY, and they must address it in the draft.
Tippmann does that, but don't be surprised if the Giants use multiple picks in the first four rounds on offensive line, either.
