The New York Giants’ head coaching search is about to kick into full gear with one game remaining in the 2025 NFL season.

Giants fans have been pitching their favorite options for months. From promising up-and-comers to once successful head coaches, there are many options for them to turn to. With the interview process close to starting, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan shared who the Giants intend to interview.

Raanan revealed a long list of coaches the Giants intend to interview this morning, and there were several key takeaways. Here are the most important things you need to know.

Are they primarily looking at defensive coaches?

Raanan’s list featured several current successful coordinators who have been fan picks throughout this process. That list included Los Angeles Chargers DC Jesse Minter, Green Bay Packers DC Jeff Hafley, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, and Indianapolis Colts DC Lou Anarumo.

It’s pretty stark that many of the potential coaches they’d hire are defensive-minded. The article did include some offensive coordinators, but they were in a section that was deemed unlikely. It appears that the Giants are aiming to go in a completely different direction. It’s shocking to realize the last time they hired a defensive coach was Bill Parcells. The results of the decision speak for themselves: Parcells won two Super Bowls. Eight of the 14 coaches listed had a defensive background.

In his intel piece, Raanan revealed an important nugget: how each candidate intends to handle Jaxson Dart will go towards their decision.

“But key in the search will be each candidate’s plan for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, especially if that coach’s expertise is not the offensive side of the ball,” Raanan wrote. “Dart, a first-round pick in last year’s draft out of Ole Miss, has flashed his rookie season and has lots of fans inside 1925 Giants Drive.”

There has been a growing narrative nationally that the Giants may intend to move on from Dart after just one season because of a rough finish to the year. That approach would be incredibly hasty, as many young quarterbacks who have shown flashes went on to become dominant starters with the right head coach. Drake Maye and Caleb Williams are two of the most recent examples.

Hearing they intend to hire someone based on how they map out a plan for Dart is encouraging. It shows they aren’t just going to bail before he gets a real chance with a healthy roster to prove himself.

There’s an intriguing list of former head coaches

The list of potential candidates also included several former head coaches. Ultimately, hiring someone who’s been a head coach may be the best route given the franchise’s recent failures with coordinators. They need someone who knows how to reset the culture in the building.

One name caught my attention because he had not been floated in the past few months. Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has been an elite defensive mind at multiple stops, but failed when he was the Broncos’ head coach from 2017 to 2018. He’s proven he’s earned a shot at a head-coaching gig, given how vital Denver’s defense is to their success.

The other name that stood out was former New York Giants player and ex-Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce. His time with the Raiders did not go well, and he’s been out of coaching in the NFL for a year. However, if they find themselves not loving their options, he provides the Giants with their own version of Mike Vrabel. And in his defense, it’s pretty clear his failure as the Raiders coach has a lot to do with how poorly that organization is run.
