Giants and Daniel Jones approach midnight on extension talks
Someone will have to blink for this standoff to end
The off-season saga that is Daniel Jones vs New York in terms of compensation continues to wage on.
As reported earlier in the week, the question is not whether Daniel Jones will be back in 2023, but rather how much will it cost.
It seems that after some late-night hobnobbing in Indianapolis, the picture is becoming clearer as to where the sides stand.
The latest information is sure to have ramifications on the future of the Giants. Firstly, we have to weigh the cost of extending Jones, as opposed to franchise tagging him.
With an estimated total of $40.1 Million in cap space, (via spotrac) New York could opt to franchise tag Jones, a figure that amounts to $32.4 million guaranteed.
However, that leaves the Giants with a little over $7.7 million in cap space this offseason.
Those aren't exactly easy waters to navigate with running back Saquon Barkley seeking to "reset" the market, and a bevy of other team needs.
The other option is to extend Jones, lowering the initial cap hit, and potentially working out a deal with Barkley or tagging him as GM Joe Schoen suggested.
An undoubtedly precarious situation, the looming variable over the talks is time.
With a March 7th deadline to use the franchise tag, and free agency opening on March 15th, we are nearly at the 11th hour in terms of negotiation.
So with a little over 48 hours to go, the Giants are faced with a potential franchise-altering decision.
Pay the good quarterback star-level money, betting on him as the future, or lose out on $32.4 million dollars that would be allocated towards critical team enhancements.
Talk about a game of deal or no deal.
