We are just a few days away from finally the New York Giants' first round selection and honestly, it'll be nice to be able to move on and actually discuss the pick instead of what they'll do with it.
The possibility of Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 overall is still a realistic one, but it's honestly a major reach. It's the ultimate proof of a quarterback's value in the NFL – teams are more than willing to reach on a guy simply because of what the position provides when there's a quality player at the helm.
The Giants have certainly done their due diligence on Sanders. They've met with him privately on multiple occasions and have attended practices and pre-draft events, as well.
After all the research, ESPN's Adam Schefter recently reported there "might not" be consensus within the building when it comes to drafting Sanders.
And yet there still might not be consensus within the building about whether to draft him. There is a belief around the league that certain segments of the Giants organization want Sanders more than others. Per sources, Sanders wants to be in a place where he has the full support of an organization, and there are questions about whether the Giants fit into that category. – Adam Schefter, ESPN
If that's the case, the Giants can't take him at No. 3 and it'd be a bad idea to even trade back into Round 1 or take him at No. 34 if those options exist. Things are not only misaligned in terms of each side's perceived value, but Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen aren't guaranteed to be around in 2026.
What if the Giants draft Sanders, but still bottom out in 2025, resulting in Daboll's and Schoen's departures? Now you have a team with a top-5 pick and a new head coach/general manager facing what should be a much-improved QB class regarding the 2026 NFL Draft.
There are just too many questions and too much uncertainty surrounding both the Giants and Sanders to where drafting him makes enough sense for it to work. Both sides are better off finding more conducive avenues to NFL success in the short and long term. But as with all things NFL – only time will tell.
