The New York Giants won’t have quarterback Tommy DeVito against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. According to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter and Giants beat writer Jordan Raanan, DeVito is expected to miss Thursday’s game because of a forearm injury. Drew Lock is expected to start.
When the Giants decided to bench (and later cut) Daniel Jones, DeVito was named the starter. However, he played only one game — a 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DeVito completed 21 of 31 passes for 189 yards, without touchdowns or interceptions.
Drew Lock signed a one-year, $5 million contract in the offseason to be Daniel Jones’ backup. But when Jones got benched, the Giants preferred to play DeVito because of his familiarity with Brian Daboll’s system.
A 28-year-old former second-round pick, Drew Lock has 23 NFL starts — 21 for the Denver Broncos and two for the Seattle Seahawks last year. He was sent from the Broncos to the Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade two years ago.
In 2024, Lock has appeared in three games for the Giants, completing four of nine passes for nine yards, a 51.6 passer rating.
Against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, Drew Lock will have the chance to prove he can be a short-term option, at least through the rest of the season, and hit free agency next March with a higher value.
With DeVito not available, the Giants' backup quarterback will be Tim Boyle, who started the season on the New York Jets and was signed by the Giants nine days ago.
