The New York Giants addressed needs and added talent through the 2023 NFL Draft back in April. In fact, the team's first three selections look to be in store for big roles right out of the gate as rookies.
First-rounder selection Deonte Banks is set to start at corner. Third-round pick Jalin Hyatt has been turning heads at wide receiver. And second-rounder John Michael Schmitz already looks to be a plug-and-play offensive lineman.
In regards to Schmitz, the rookie out of Minnesota was widely regarded as the best overall center prospect in the 2023 rookie class. New York took advantage when he fell out of the first-round, and they are set to reap those benefits.
The Giants have one of the best left tackles in the league in Andrew Thomas. Pro Focus Football is predicting that it won't take too long for Schmitz to establish himself as the second best player along the offensive line in New York.
A second-round selection, John Michael Schmitz put together some elite tape in college. He may not have had an elite athletic profile — that probably would have pushed him into the first round — but his tape is littered with the blocks you need elite athleticism to make.
Schmitz earned a 92.3 PFF grade in 2022 and allowed just 13 pressures in his last two years. Andrew Thomas is an All-Pro caliber player at left tackle, but a solid rookie year could see Schmitz already install himself as the team’s second-best lineman.
If Schmitz continues to show the promise that he has shown in the preseason, then good things will be bound to happen on offense for New York. The expectations are high for the rookie lineman.
Why the Giants could fail to build on team’s playoff berth
A national media outlet suggests that the New York Giants could struggle to make the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
