The 2023 NFL season officially got underway on Thursday night when the Detroit Lions pulled out a road victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on the primetime stage.
While Detroit deserves a lot of credit for knocking off the defending champs to open the season, most of the talk coming out of the game is centered around the Chiefs. More specifically, the weapons that Mahomes was throwing the ball to.
Kansas City struggled to catch passes and hold on to the ball against the Lions. It was a sloppy performance, highlighted by a tipped pick-six that bounced off the hands of Kadarius Toney. Which was a fitting moment for Giants fans.
New York traded Toney to the Chiefs in exchange for what became Darren Waller. That's a win for the Giants, especially on paper. So when the former Giants first-rounder struggled on Thursday night, social media was buzzing.
Toney was directly responsible for the touchdown that led to the Lions tying the game with the Chiefs in the third quarter. He finished with a negative expected points added in what was a forgettable performance for the former Florida star.
In fact, the performance from Toney was the lowest graded outing from a wide receiver since 2018, according to data rom Pro Football Focus. It was that bad in week one.
Therefore, the New York Giants came away as winners without even playing during the opening night of the 2023 NFL season. Perhaps that fortune carries over to the Giants' own week one game.
