The New York Giants have been commonplace when it comes to mocking recievers in the first round. A significant need, there is a likelihood they adress the position on April 27th.
But the truth is, the Giants are in the back end of round one, and most if not all of the true round one graded prospects will be gone by then.
That means New York should be heistant to reach for a receiver just because, something Rhett Lewis of NFL Network did in his recent mock draft.
Jordan Addison, WR, USC
Pause, I know what your thinking, how is Addison a bad pick at 25?
He's the best wide receiver in the draft according to many, he has a consensus ranking of 20th overall and in this scenario, the Giants stay put and select him without having to trade up, how could that be bad?
Let me explain:
First off, I love Addison the prospect. A smooth strider with excellent route tempo and technique, I believe he can have a long and fruitful career in the league.
But I don't think that will occur if he's drafted to New York.
The Giants current wide receiver room is inundated with one body type, and one playstyle:
Smaller players that utilize jitterbug quickness to work the middle of the field and occasionally stretch the field vertically, but do most of their damage from Slot alignments.
If that's not Addison in a nutshell, I don't know what is.
Addison measured in at the NFL Scouting Combine at 5'11'' and 173 pounds with 8 and 3/4'' hands and arms slightly over 30 inches.
Those measurables are, well, small to put mildly.
Typicaly, you can overlook that in a player if he is an elite athlete, but Addison ran a 4.49 40 yard dash (good not great, certainly not elite) and had a 1.56 10-yard split, which is worrisome considering his size and playstyle.
Once again, I truly think Addison is going to be a good player, but I think his play in the NFL will primarily be in the slot, a position the Giants are overflowing with.
I have a high 2nd-round grade on Addison, so it's conceivable the Giants select him at 25, but I would rather see him go in the mid-'40s, a pick the Giants don't have.
And as Jim Nagy (Executive Director of Reeses Senior Bowl and former NFL Scout) pointed out, don't believe the mock draft hype.
The good news?
I doubt GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll have spent much time reading mock drafts.
