The New York Giants have plenty of routes for success in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Two positions make the most sense if the talent is still available. Those would be wide receiver and cornerback.

The Giants need an impact playmaker at both positions in order to improve on either side of the ball. In a recent mock draft, New York went in a direction that doesn't make much sense.

In Chad Reuter's latest mock draft on NFL.com, he had the Giants selecting Clemson linebacker Trenton Simpson in round one.

Signing Bobby Okereke was a nice start for the Giants as they fortify their linebacker corps. Simpson can play in the middle or step outside. He offers excellent quickness and is a tenacious tackler.

Simpson is a very good linebacker prospect. He deserves to go somewhere at the end of the first round, so this value does make sense.

That being said, the need doesn't match the selection.

Bobby Okereke was a massive addition for New York in free agency, and he can be their LB1 in today's NFL. Adding a linebacker in round two or three would make much more sense for New York.

Plus, there's talent on the board at bigger positions of need that would qualify for the 25th overall selection.

Specifically, Zay Flowers and Quentin Johnston were both available at WR in this scenario. At CB, Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Cam Smith are two cornerbacks that were available and are projected to go around their pick.

A couple of CBs went in the mid/late-teens as well, so a move up for one of them should be in the cards for Giants if the board fell like this.

Drafting solely for need isn't the move in the NFL. Although, in this scenario, the Giants should not take a linebacker with other impressive talent at more important positions on the board for them.
