The Giants are coming off a terrific start to 2023. It began when they won a playoff game as an underdog, gained steam over the free-agent period, and climaxed this past weekend with the NFL Draft.
But through all that, the team still lacks some appropriate depth and high-level talent at certain roster spots. I have been open about their need to continue to add linebackers, as too much pressure is placed on star signing Bobby Okereke.
But in The Athletic's latest column, they surveyed their beat reporters to see each team's biggest needs after the draft, with the Giants having an interesting angle.
Here is what Charlotte Carroll who covers the Giants for The Athletic had to say:
Overall, the Giants did a great job of addressing their biggest needs during the draft. However, other areas that could use some improved depth are edge and safety. Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari are a solid 1-2 punch on the edge for the Giants, but some depth would be beneficial given they both dealt with injuries this season and the players behind them don’t have a lot of pass rush production on their resumes. GM Joe Schoen said it’s a position they can continue to look for, but they’re excited about Elerson Smith and Tomon Fox.
Now I have some good news for those worried about edge depth, as the Giants re-signed an important pass rusher yesterday. And I'm all for adding depth at one of the critical factor positions, but it's hard for me to see this as the team's greatest need.
Carroll also added the need to upgrade and or add depth at the safety position but between Xavier McKinney and newly signed Bobby McCain, I think the starters are suitable as their ball-hawking resume is noteworthy.
They then have second-year player Dane Belton (who I liked in last year's pre-draft process) and newly drafted seventh-rounder Gervarrious Owens as backups, making that group an underrated position in my opinion.
But outside of two rookie undrafted free agents, the Giants have gone all in on Jarrad Davis as their starter opposite of Okereke at linebacker, which is worrisome in my opinion.
The former first-round pick has become a journeyman of sorts, bouncing around teams and practice squads alike. For that reason, inside linebacker remains my biggest need for the Giants, but I'll trust Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen on this one.
