The more it looks like Saquon Barkley is going to sit out the New York Giants' 2023 season, the more imperative it becomes to set Daniel Jones up in the best situation possible.
The Giants are trying to do just that with their latest free agent signing in veteran wideout, Cole Beasley. The 12-year-veteran has plenty of experience and familiarity with head coach Brian Daboll after playing in his system for three seasons. Sure, he may not be the same guy that recorded 131 receptions for 2,438 yards and 11 touchdowns from 2019-2021, but he can still provide quality snaps in a crowded receiver room.
And, actually, it's not just a crowded receiver room. It's an extremely crowded receiver room that, including Beasley, features 14 different names fighting for jobs:
- Darius Slayton
- Parris Campbell
- Sterling Shepard
- Wan'Dale Robinson
- Isaiah Hodgins
- Jalin Hyatt
- Collin Johnson
- Jeff Smith
- Jamison Crowder
- David Sills V
- Makai Polk
- Kalil Pimpleton
- Bryce Ford-Wheaton
- Jaydon Mickens
While that many receivers means a lot of guys are going to be looking for new jobs in September, it's a good problem for Jones. As we all know, Barkley is one of the best receiving backs in the NFL and his production won't be easy to replace if sits out.
Case in point: He tied for the team lead with 57 receptions and his 338 receiving yards were good for fourth-most.
Someone -or someones- will have to potentially step up and fill the void, so why not give yourself as many options as possible?
The slot receiver position will be highly contested and fun to watch. Daboll's offense is at its best when it has a reliable slot receiver, too. Beasley was that guy in Buffalo and it'll be interesting to see if he can recapture the best three-year stretch of his career.
Jones certainly hopes that happens. But it's not like he won't have any alternate options if Beasley doesn't.
