Giants set a record by signing Andrew Thomas to 5-year extension

The New York Giants have had one of the busier offseasons in the NFL.

Free agent acquisitions, trades, extensions, you name it, they have done it.

But following this morning's news, this extension comes with poor timing, especially when you see how much they just shelved out:

Giants sign LT Andrew Thomas to Mega Extension

The Giants' front office has been busy over the past 24 hours. They have locked up their two best offensive players following Barkley's one-year deal yesterday, and today's news that New York has signed Andrew Thomas to a five-year extension worth over $117 million dollars, per ESPN's Adam Schefter:

The timing is questionable, especially when you consider the fodder surrounding the Giants and the NFL as a whole not paying running backs, yet as evident by today's extension, New York is more than willing to pay up to the guys blocking for Saquon.

But Thomas is more than worthy of the extension, showing a growth potential that was highly doubted following his first season in New York. A rocky start had the former fourth overall pick being pegged as a bust after his rookie year, but steady improvements brought him all the way to second-team All-Pro status in 2022, and now a pillar of the franchise for years to come.

So hopefully Thomas sets a precedent for patience amongst coaches, GMs, and fans, showing that especially at left tackle, it can take some time to reach your potential.

And at only 24 years old, Thomas' ceiling has still yet to be reached.
