New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley left the team's Week 2 game with an apparent injury. Shortly after, we learned that he suffered an ankle sprain. Luckily, Barkley avoided major injury, and his timetable for a return is not extravagant.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll expanded on his recovery on Tuesday when he did not rule out Barkley for Thursday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Of course, this could certainly be some 'coach speak' from Daboll. The Giants want the 49ers to prepare as though Barkley will play, even if he winds up being out for the game.
Barkley's reported timetable was originally 2-3 weeks. There's a good chance that's still the case for the Pro Bowl RB.
As a top runner in the NFL, New York should not rush him back. The offense will certainly have more difficulties without him, but they cannot risk further injury to his ankle by rushing him back onto the field.
Regardless, it is a good sign for Barkley. Daboll did not scoff at the idea that he could be back sooner rather than later, and he did not immediately rule his top running back out this week.
