The New York Giants made their 2023 draft class official today. The finalized it by officially inking second-round pick John Michael-Schmitz to a deal. The former Minnesota offensive lineman completes their class that they're very excited about right now.
He will most likely step into a starting spot for New York. JMS projects to be the starting center for the Giants. He was the most polished center prospect in the class, according to many scouts.
The 6-4, 320-pounder spent six seasons with the Golden Gophers, including a redshirt year in 2017 and five on the field. Schmitz played in 57 games with 35 starts and started all 31 games in which he played in his final three seasons. The Chicago native graduated with a degree in sport management and was named Academic All-Big Ten in five consecutive seasons (2018-22). Schmitz was the fifth Gopher ever to be both an All-American for his play on the field and an Academic All-American, joining Bob Hobert (1956), Bob Stein (1968), Greg Eslinger (2004, 2005), and Maxx Williams (2014). In 2022, Schmitz started all 12 regular-season games at center. He opted out of the Pinstripe Bowl and accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Schmitz was selected AP and FWAA first-team All-America and voted first-team All-Big Ten by coaches and media. — NYG team website
