New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas is out for the remainder of the season after having successful Lisfranc surgery on Wednesday morning, per a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Thomas injured his foot during the third quarter of Sunday night's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Amazingly, he returned to and finished the game. Losing Thomas is a huge blow for an already struggling Giants offense. It's offensive line has been the bright spot of the unit, but is now left tackle could become a liability.
The Giants have a few options for replacing Thomas. They could move right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor over to the left side, or go with backups Joshua Ezeudu or Evan Neal. Whoever takes over for Thomas, they'll have big shoes to fill as he is one of the top left tackles in the league.
Thomas was named an All-Pro in 2022, earning a five–year, $117.5 million contract extension the following offseason. Unfortunately, he has been plagued with injuries in every other year of his career since being drafted in 2020. In 2021, Thomas spent time on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Then in 2023 he injured his hamstring in New York's season opener, costing him seven games.
The Giants' offensive line struggled mightily when Thomas went down last year, surrendering the second-most sacks in NFL history with 85. Losing Thomas will also be a blow to the rushing attack, which has been subpar as it is, ranking 24th in the league. Sitting at 2-4 and in last place in the NFC East, the Giants will have to figure things out fast if they hope to salvage their season.
