The New York Giants closed out the 2023 NFL Draft with two selections in the seventh and final round including Oregon defensive tackle Jordon Riley and Houston safety Gervarrius Owens.

New York made sure to finish the draft on a strong note, adding a large nose tackle with the traits to make it in the league, and a productive safety that will play the run and pass with equal efficiency.

And just because these players were selected in the seventh round, it doesn't mean they won't be key contributors. So let's go into a little background on the Giants final picks of the 2023 NFL Draft.

  • Jordon Riley, DT, Oregon
  • Gervarrius Owens, S, Houston

Here is what Dane Brugler of The Athletic had to say about Owens:

A four-year starter at Houston, Owens played a free safety role in defensive coordinator Doug Belk’s 4-2-5 base scheme. He played 46 games the past four seasons for the Cougars (missed only one game) and proved himself as a factor at all three levels of the field. Owens reads the backfield action well for efficient response times as he races to the action, though his field vision and cover skills were better in zone compared to man. He has the mentality and toughness for downhill run support, but his control and finish as a tackler must improve. Overall, Owens lacks consistency in several areas (ball skills, tackling, route recognition), but he anticipates with the aggressive athleticism pro coaches will appreciate. He projects as a backup and special-teamer who can be more with NFL coaching.

Riley is a massive human being, measuring in at 6'5 and nearly 340 pounds at the Oregon Pro Day. He is an obvious choice to be a nose tackle in New York's 3-4 defense and could be a solid addition if he turns out to be a successful late-round flyer.
