The New York Giants locked down a star player last week when they extended defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. In effect, they also saved some money for their salary cap this season. Accordingly, the smart move gave them some relief against the cap to potentially add even more outside talent to the roster.
Dexter Lawrence’s cap hit this year will be $6.65 million, per source. He was set to count $12.4M against the cap before the new contract.
Some of that cap space will go towards locking down their rookie class. Additionally, they could add a couple more impact veteran free agents. The Giants still have some needs in terms of depth at safety, offensive line, and linebacker – in particular.
So, extending Lawrence hit two birds with one stone for the Giants. Expect them to be somewhat active during the next wave of free agency.
They have their cornerstone interior DL player locked up long-term already. Now, the Saquon Barkley contract situation takes center stage in New York.
