The New York Giants just got much better on Thursday morning. They're trading for Arizona Cardinals S Isaiah Simmons, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

That possibly concludes the Giants' long search for a linebacker for their defense, one of the most pressing needs they had entering the season. Having seen what they've got in their young linebackers, the front office is now getting a big-time playmaker who can contribute to the position as a hybrid defender.

What makes the trade a thousand times better is the fact that they're getting Simmons – a former eighth-overall pick – at an extremely steep discount. In return for Simmons, the Giants are sending the Cardinals nothing but a seventh-round draft pick for the 2024 NFL Draft.

The reason for such a cheap price has everything to do with the fact that Simmons is entering a contract year in 2023 and is up for an extension. The Cardinals are in full rebuild mode and are not expecting to be winners this season.

Simmons is bound to fit right into what the Giants are trying to do defensively under DC Wink Martindale. As a coach who loves to play man coverage and blitz opponents, Simmons' versatility will be key. He can be a match-up nightmare for opposing offenses and can line up all across the defense.

Consider his snaps-by-position counts for last season per PFF

  • Defensive line: 110
  • Box: 297
  • Slot corner: 409
  • Wide corner: 28
  • Free safety: 53

Expect to see Simmons just about everywhere for the Giants as the defense attempts to bounce back from a poor season in 2022. Despite a winning record and a playoff berth, the Giants finished the season as the 29th defense in the NFL, per Football Outsiders' DVOA.
