These key stats exponse weaknesses the Giants must attack against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3
Could these weaknesses be enough for the New York Giants to upset the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3 on Sunday Night Football?
The New York Giants have a daunting challenge ahead of them this Sunday night. With a desire to get their first win of 2025, they’ll need to be at their best to defeat the reigning AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
2025 has not been kind to the Chiefs, as they’ve stumbled through the beginning of their schedule to a winless start like New York has. For Kansas City, this is viewed as a chance to regain its footing and win its division, potentially reaching the Super Bowl again.
With several issues holding them back, the Chiefs are more beatable than many Giants fans would have assumed when they first saw their 2025 schedule. This is what New York must prepare to see on Sunday.
Chiefs’ offensive inconsistencies
The most shocking issues the Chiefs have dealt with are that their offensive line isn’t playing as well as they typically do, and they’re nowhere near as explosive.
On their offensive line, three players who have struggled the most are Kingsley Suamataia, Jawan Taylor, and Josh Simmons. Through two games, Suamataia has allowed eight pressures and five hurries per Pro Football Focus; Simmons has allowed four pressures. Additionally, Taylor has been flagged for six penalties, and Simmons has two.
Another statistic that should intrigue the Giants’ pass rush is that they’re one of the worst teams at giving star quarterback Patrick Mahomes time in the pocket. So far, they have the third-worst average time to pressure at 2.35 seconds per NFL Pro. Mahomes has survived mostly because he’s fantastic at improvising and has scrambled 13 times already in 2025.
The Giants’ talented pass rush trio should be licking their chops at the opportunity ahead of them. If they can contain Mahomes effectively, they should be able to register several sacks and halt their offense.
The Chiefs’ defense is still elite
While this game presents an excellent opportunity to catch the typically dominant Chiefs offense off guard, they will have their hands full against their defense. Giants fans are familiar with the mad man calling their aggressive defense, Steve Spagnuolo.
Spagnuolo has always been a blitz-heavy coach, and this year they’ve relied heavily on blitzes to generate pressure. Right now, they’re second in the NFL in blitz rate on passing plays at 47% per NFL Pro. With that pressure, defensive linemen George Karlaftis has seven hurries and Chris Jones has three per Pro Football Focus.
As Giants fans know, this could be a frightening situation for their shaky offensive line to handle. They’ve had a lot of trouble through two games keeping pressure off of Russell Wilson. Even if Andrew Thomas plays, it could be challenging to protect Wilson.
One area that could be potentially exposed is Kansas City’s secondary, which could lead to a lot of separation. They’re currently the third-worst team in the NFL in average target separation allowed with 3.9. With the emergence of Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson as deep ball threats, taking more deep shots could be profitable.
Beating the Chiefs this Sunday will not be easy, but if they capitalize on some of these weaknesses, the Giants could pull off an upset.
