The New York Giants are in a bit of a tough spot with one of their best players.
Earlier this off-season, they were expected to sign star running back Saquon Barkley to the franchise tag. That would keep him on the roster for this season, and the team would continue negotiations on a new deal.
The discussions continued up until the tag deadline, but it seemed like both sides were content on making that happen. Clearly, that was not the case.
Now, that has taken a turn as Barkley doesn't plan on signing the tag, according to a latest report.
The Giants begin their off-season program on Monday. He would need to sign the tag before that in order to be eligible to be a part of team activities going forward.
In his career, Barkley has missed 27% of games that he has been eligible for due to injury. When healthy, he is one of the best running backs in the NFL, though.
Without Barkley, the Giants RB depth chart is headlined by Matt Breida and Gary Brightwell. Barkley continues to look for a long-term extension from New York.
