It didn’t take long for the Giants to be linked to one of the biggest names in the NFL world amid their head coaching search
A major potential candidate in the New York Giants head coaching search just entered the mix. News broke on Tuesday that the Baltimore Ravens are parting ways with their longtime head coach, John Harbaugh.
Insider Jordan Schultz immediately reported that the Giants were one of the teams to watch for where he could land. The rapid nature of this update should excite fans in New York.
Giants among teams to watch for John Harbaugh
The recent failures of the Ravens benefited the Giants, who need to hire a head coach with prior head-coaching experience. The team has signficantly struggled to find their next head man since Tom Coughlin by hiring coordinators from other franchises.
Former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, who was fired yesterday, presented an intriguing option for that exact reason. Bringing in someone who has already run a ship before is what is needed to reset the culture.
The resume of the 63-year-old head coach speaks for itself. He was the Ravens’ head coach for 18 seasons from 2008 to 2025, and epitomized consistency in the league. He posted a 180-113 record, suitable for a 61.4% winning percentage.
His consistency isn’t even his most impressive feat, as he won a Super Bowl in 2012. Throughout his career, he won the AFC North six times and reached the playoffs 12 times in 18 seasons.
Giants must go all in on Harbaugh
In a coaching cycle with limited home run options, Harbaugh’s entering the mix completely changes everything. Hiring a former Super Bowl-winning head coach is rare. Adding the context of why he was fired makes it even more enticing. This isn’t a circumstance of gradual regression. Baltimore struggled in 2025 because it suffered serious injuries midway through the season, during its most challenging portion of the schedule.
If the Giants aspire to return to their winning consistency and consider themselves to truly be one of the best franchises in the history of the NFL, they cannot let Harbaugh go elsewhere. The culture he built in Baltimore is one that the Giants have struggled to find since Coughlin.
Most importantly, the Giants cannot allow general manager Joe Schoen to stand in the way of this move. Just like with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year with Liam Coen and Trent Baalke, they need to be willing to fire Schoen if Harbaugh doesn’t want to work with him.
If the Giants can land Harbaugh, it could be a franchise-altering move to return the team to its winning ways. Hopefully, they can sell him on taking the job over other openings.
