One would assume playing in your first-ever NFL action as a rookie would be incredibly daunting. However, it’s not for New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.

When speaking with the media today, Dart was asked about his mentality going into New York’s game against the Buffalo Bills this Saturday. He responded with a direct and powerful statement.

“Yeah, I’m not scared. When I go out there, I’m going to play the game that I know how to play and the offense here, they don’t give me restrictions on what I can and can’t do … I think if you’re going to play scared as a quarterback, you shouldn’t be out there.”

Today, Dart was peppered by the media with questions regarding his mental state. All of his answers were green flags for why he has the right mindset before he even takes a snap. Pressing and trying to do way too much can drag down any quarterback. It can especially stunt the growth of young QBs trying to progress.

Selecting Dart was a controversial pick for Giants fans, as some see him as a savior and others as an eventual bust. Dart was level-headed when sharing if he needed to prove anything on Saturday.

“I don’t feel like I need to go out there and think to myself, ‘I need to prove this. I need to prove that.’ I want to kind of just be in my game. I want to be in my own space. I want to be able to encourage others, help raise the play of the guys around me and I just want to win so whatever that takes for me to
do when I’m out there on the field, that’s my mindset.”

Dart also discussed the guidance he’s received from the veterans on the roster after they met with the rookies this week. Their message was very similar to one that coaches and players have echoed all week.

“At the end of the day, it’s the same game you were playing when you were a kid so just enjoy that. Compete, don’t leave any regrets out there on the field and don’t ever take this moment lightly and there’s no light that’s too bright to play in.”

Overall, hearing Dart’s perspective before he plays is very promising, and it can provide some solace to fans that their new quarterback isn’t wound too tight. However, Dart still needs to actually play before we declare him the right man to lead New York.
