During a week of constant changes for the New York Giants, there is another major one coming.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jameis Winston will be elevated to the team’s backup quarterback spot and Russell Wilson will be relegated to QB3. There is a possibility for Winston to start this Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, with Jaxson Dart currently in concussion protocol after suffering one against the Chicago Bears in Week 10.
Now that Winston will serve as the backup, what does this mean for Wilson’s future with the team?
Will Russell Wilson stick with the Giants?
It’s been abundantly clear this season that Wilson has signficantly regressed past the point where he can be a quality starter. In his three starts at the beginning of the year, the Giants went 0-3, and he averaged 259.3 passing yards per game, one touchdown, one interception, and a 59% completion rate.
When Dart left this past week’s game against the Bears due to a concussion, Wilson stepped in and completely derailed the offense’s momentum. It served as a glaring example of how much he held the team back. He finished the game with 45 yards and a 42% completion percentage.
The move to Winston makes a lot of sense and, quite frankly, should have happened immediately after Wilson was benched for Dart. It was another move that Daboll refused to make for inexplicable reasons that could feed into why he was fired.
Winston is the younger, more dynamic option. He’s also been constantly discussed as a key piece in Dart’s development.
Now that this move has been made, it could prompt Wilson to request his release from the team. While Wilson likely isn’t good enough to be a team’s starter anymore, he is still better than many teams’ backup situations.
Having been a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, he will be valued by most franchises looking to improve their backup spot. Obviously, now that the trade deadline has passed, the only way for Wilson to make this move is to be released. Considering his career success, I’d find it hard to believe he’d be content with sitting around and not dressing for games.
We’ll see soon if this amounts to anything, but as of right now, it would make the most sense for both parties to go their separate ways. The experiment of signing Wilson to be a 1-year high-end veteran starter has completely failed.
