The New York Giants suffered another devastating loss in Week 12 against the Detroit Lions, but it wasn’t without some highly entertaining moments from Jameis Winston and the offense.
One of the best plays of the game came via a Winston touchdown reception – something no one had on their Bingo card coming in. So, we had to give the play its proper due respect by breaking it all down.
A to Z NFL’s Kyle Crabbs joined the chat to tell us what exactly went down and how Winston ended up with the first receiving touchdown of his career.
Winston’s receiving touchdown is one of the top plays of the year
Kyle: Credit to Giants interim HC Mike Kafka. This was the perfect call for the perfect look on defense.
Leading 20-17 early in the fourth quarter, the Giants were sitting on the fringe of scoring territory at Detroit’s 33-yard line. This is a popular pressure area for defenses in an effort to knock the opposing offense out of kicking range. Sure enough, the Giants aligned in the pistol with 12p on the field, which kept Detroit in their base 4-3 defensive package. A pre-snap shift invited more defenders to the line of scrimmage and confirmed Detroit was in a pressure look with man coverage behind it.
When the ball is snapped, Winston faked a handoff to Devin Singletary before flipping the football to WR Gunner Olszewski on an end-around and booting out the back door of this play, away from all of the run flow and the end-around. The Lions’ secondary is focused on capping tight end Theo Johnson’s post down the middle of the field, which eats both linebacker Jack Campbell and free safety Thomas Harper. If not for a strong play of recognition from LB Derrick Barnes, who was rushing the quarterback off the defensive right edge on this play, Winston wouldn’t have had a soul within 40 yards of him.
Instead, Barnes fell off his rush and tried to trail Winston. His effort only made the end result more entertaining, as Winston spun and juked and stiff-armed and spun again to shake Barnes’ tackle attempt and score to give the Giants an even bigger lead.
Joe: At the start of the fourth quarter, the Giants held a three-point lead and somehow most of the momentum in the game. With the team placed in an improbable position to lead one of the best teams in the NFC North, there was no point in being conservative or careful.
After gradually marching into Lions territory, Giants fans watched in wonderment as their backup quarterback and emotional leader Mossed and trucked an unsuspecting Lions defender for a touchdown. There couldn’t be a more perfect play delivered to Giants fans who have been desperate for memorable moments during a lost season.
The ridiculousness of how the play unfolded, with their primary return man, Olszewski, throwing the ball to Winston, was the levity New York needed. Especially during a year in which the Giants’ lack of receivers was accentuated since losing Malik Nabers, to have Winston become one of your most productive receivers is amazing.
Ultimately, the Giants went on to blow that 10-point lead this play created, but at least Giants fans have a memory they’ll never forget.
