New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart’s performance against the Denver Broncos in Week 7 was one of the few positives from the devastating loss.

Despite enduring a historic collapse, there are still aspects of this team to be excited about. It’s apparent that the roster has the right core pieces to build a sturdy foundation for the next head coach. The main leader of that is, of course, Dart, with the way he rallies the troops off the field and his improving play on the field.

Dart made numerous big-time throws in crucial situations along with gritty runs to convert first downs. He finished the game with 283 passing yards, three touchdowns, one interception, and one rushing touchdown. However, those stats don’t fully highlight how impactful he was in the victory.

Jaxson Dart continues to shine

The Giants were positioned to win this game heading into the fourth quarter because of the plays he made. The most compelling stat from after the game was how reliable he was against the blitz, facing one of the NFL’s best defenses. Per NFL Pro, Dart completed 8 of 14 passes for 193 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception when the Broncos were blitzing. That is the third-most passing yards against the blitz this season.

Dart’s poise under duress was one of his best traits coming out of Ole Miss. His ability to stand in the pocket when being blitzed and not be fazed is what separated him from other prospects. For him to already be performing well under pressure this early is incredibly promising. Imagine what he can do in year 2 or year 3 in late-game situations.

Another stat from the entire season that adds to his promising start is his first-down rate after his first read. Per Hayden Winks, Dart is second in the NFL at producing first downs in those situations.

One of the more concerning traits that Dart had as a prospect was his inability to navigate multiple reads. Lane Kiffin’s offense allowed for his decision-making to be reliant on his initial read. Oftentimes, he made his worst mistakes when trying to evaluate the full field. This would lead to sacks from holding the ball too long or forcing the ball into coverage. For him to be second in the NFL in that statistic proves he is ahead of schedule.

Dart did have a brutal interception late in the game that sparked the comeback. However, the decision to throw late and not run to take time off the clock and then punt to make Denver march the length of the field is on the coaches. Rookie quarterbacks are bound to make mistakes like that, and it should be correctable. Additionally, rookies need to make mistakes like that to learn from them.

Overall, Giants fans shouldn’t waste their time stressing over the coaching staff’s failures and instead get excited about the future of their young quarterback. If they can get the next hire right, this team can be on a trajectory towards consistency.
