‘That’s what we’re shooting for’ – John Harbaugh gets bold talking new Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy
The New York Giants head coach is all in on Nagy, who will play a crucial part in Jaxson Dart’s development.
John Harbaugh didn’t land his preferred offensive coordinator when putting together his New York Giants coaching staff. But that doesn’t mean he has high expectations for the man that will lead Jaxson Dart and the offense in the 2026 NFL season.
Harbaugh gets bold about Matt Nagy
In a recent interview with The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor, Harbaugh talked about missing out on Todd Monken as his OC. The latter was hired to be the Cleveland Browns head coach, which prompted Harbaugh’s pivot to Matt Nagy, who most recently coached the Kansas City Chiefs offense.
The question was simple. Can Nagy, his second choice, match what he visualized Monken would do? Harbaugh’s response wasn’t a simple yes.
“Of course,” Harbaugh said. “I expect Matt to be the best ever. I’m hoping he’ll be the best offensive coordinator to ever coach the game; that’s what we’re shooting for.”
Nagy has a long way to go before he can even be considered one of the best OCs in the league at the moment. During his most recent time with the Chiefs, Kansas City’s offense played some of its worst football of the Patrick Mahomes era, though those problems are also talent-related.
In his time leading the Chicago Bears offense as head coach, he failed ranked outside the league’s Top 20 in yards each season from 2018 to 2021.
By saying he expects him to be one of the best ever, Harbaugh is intentionally setting the bar high for Nagy. You may call it coachspeak, but this is what he does. When he took over the Giants, he didn’t talk about rebuilding and winning in the future. He talked about winning now.
Sure, Harbaugh is no elite play caller. But he sets the tone.
Nagy’s best trait is experience
Though Nagy was seen as an underwhelming by many fans because of the things pointed out above, he had direct access to Andy Reid and Mahomes for a long time. He’s been in charge of a team and this time, he’ll be the top leader in his unit again.
His experience is valuable as Dart enters only his second year in the NFL. Now the Giants hope it translates to yards and points, and those to wins.
