John Harbaugh isn’t messing around with his search for the next Giants offensive coordinator
The New York Giants need to get their offensive coordinator hire right, and John Harbaugh knows it.
The New York Giants were on the wrong side of one of the biggest NFL plot twists we’ve seen this year. Before Todd Monken signed on to head coach the Cleveland Browns, he was expected to reunite with John Harbaugh in New York.
The Browns settling on Monken, however, left Harbaugh looking for his new offensive coordinator. And it’s a decision he needs to get right, as the Giants have a young and rising quarterback in Jaxson Dart. Fortunately, Harbaugh is adding some heavy hitters into the mix.
Giants looking into big-name candidates
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Giants are planning to or have talked to a couple of former NFL head coaches: Brian Callahan and Kliff Kingsbury.
In Kingsbury’s case, he recently led Jayden Daniels and the 2024 Washington Commanders offense to the NFC Championship Game as offensive coordinator. In Year 2 calling the plays under Dan Quinn, Kingsbury’s offense stalled though injuries at wide receiver and quarterback (Daniels played only seven games) played a big role in that. It was a surprise when the Commanders and he decided to mutually part ways last month.
As for Callahan, things didn’t go great in Tennessee but he was a standout offensive coordinator in Cincinnati when he was a part of the Bengals’ Super Bowl run in 2021. He had a hand in each of the Bengals’ five playoff wins this decade.
Though experience alone doesn’t mean either of these two would be right hire for Harbaugh, it’s a positive indicator that he’s looking into big-name coaches and not just coaches on the rise.
Other known candidates for Giants OC
In addition to Kingsbury and Callahan, the Giants are known to be interested in:
- Davis Webb, Denver Broncos pass game coordinator/QB coach
- Shane Day, Los Angeles Chargers QB coach
- Jim Bob Cooter, Indianapolis Colts OC
- Alex Tanney, Colts pass game coordinator
