A new era has officially begun in New York, and it’s off to an incredible start.

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh spoke to the media for the first time today in his introductory press conference, and what he had to say about Jaxson Dart should excite fans. Harbaugh spoke at length about expectations for his players and the types of guys he’s seeking to add to the roster.

His comments about Dart were certainly the most intriguing.

John Harbaugh emphasizes building around Jaxson Dart

Harbaugh was asked numerous times about Dart and his importance to the entire process. When speaking with SNY’s Nikki Lattarulo, he emphatically backed Dart’s role in the team’s future.

“It’s going to be the Jaxson Dart way,” Harbaugh told Lattarulo. “It’s going to be whatever is best for him. We have a lot to work with in him. People are excited about him for a reason. He’s a tough competitor. He’s got tons of talent. He loves football. He wants to work hard. Those ingredients work pretty well.”

For Harbaugh to be direct about how Dart fits into this team’s rebuilding puzzle should be promising for fans. Not because it’s important for Dart’s future, but because having a clear early direction limits any potential hurdles in the first year.

Plenty of times, new coaches come in and feel discomfort with trying to build around a young quarterback they didn’t draft. In this case, Harbaugh is making it clear that Dart’s identity aligns with his vision for the team. He stated that during his press conference.

“To me, he’s about football,” Harbaugh told reporters. “This young guy loves football. He wants to talk football all the time. That’s kind of what I like doing too, so I think we’re going to have a lot of great conversations. I can’t wait to get started with him.”

Harbaugh is all about football guys

It may sound like a cliche, but listening to a coach talk about a team identity centered on loving football should fire everyone up. Harbaugh stated multiple times that’s what he’s seeking from his players.

“If you love football, you’re going to want to be here,” Harbaugh stated. “If there’s guys around that don’t love football, we’re probably going to let those guys go play somewhere else. If you don’t love football, you’re not going to love it here.”

While that may not have been a lacking trait of past coaches, it’s refreshing to hear that it’s a core tenet for the franchise. Hopefully, that mentality leaks into the roster early and over the course of this offseason.
