The New York Jets have not made the playoffs in over a dozen years, and that type of streak comes with a lot of responsibilities. Mainly, being the butt of the joke.
The Jets are an easy target. They are ripe for parody and the only thing that will put an end to it is winning.
So, naturally, they're catching haymakers from media, players and even coaches simply for existing.
Take the Super Bowl for example. The Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid set Patrick Mahomes up for a wide open, game-winning throw toMecole Hardman in the end zone.
That’s the same Mecole Hardman who signed with the Jets last offseason, only to get traded back to Kansas City after Nathaniel Hackett couldn’t figure out how to use him in his pedestrian offense (look, even I took a shot at them for no reason).
After the game, while on his media tour, Hardman couldn’t help but take a shot at the Jets.
Can’t say I blame Hardman for his comments. Imagine making a decision that affects every aspect of your life only to realize very quickly it was the wrong one. Then he got a reprieve when the Jets sent him back to the place he belonged. I wouldn’t want to be reminded of it, either.
And it’s not just Super Bowl champions that are picking on the lowly New York Jets. The losers even got a couple of shots in. After the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers fired their defensive coordinator, Steve Wilks. In the ensuing press conference, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan couldn’t resist a quick swipe at his former defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh.
What’s wrong with this comment is that he is incorrect. Robert Saleh is still a high-energy coach. Anyone who watches him on the sidelines when his defense comes up with a big play or his offense scores a touchdown will see him go nuts.
Has he toned it down since his days in San Francisco? Sure. But that could simply be a product of getting older and being focused on the entire game as opposed to just the defense. Still, I wouldn’t say Saleh lacks for energy with the Jets.
There are countless other examples of cheap shots taken at the New York Jets, and Jets fans will simply have to endure them until they can prove to be a winner.
Jets Offseason Road Map: Three players to avoid in free agency
After another heartbreaking year and extending their North American sports leading playoff drought to 13 seasons, it’s time for the Jets to focus on the offseason. The Jets won’t be looking at any major changes to the coaching staff, so they will be focused solely on the draft and NFL free agency to finally end […]
