The Daniel Jones saga has reached its next chapter in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings are signing the former New York Giants starting quarterback.

Jones signs with Vikings

Jones will head to Minnesota as the backup to Sam Darnold. He is being signed to their practice squad for now.

The latter has played some of the best football of his career so far this season, but he has also dealt with some more often inconsistencies in the past month of pay. Jones will be an affordable, veteran option that has a mobile ability that Kevin O'Connell prefers in his quarterback.

We will see if Jones hits the field this season, but the Vikings fit Jones' requirements. He wanted to go to a contending team and have a potential chance to play. If Darnold hits another wall or suffers an injury, Jones would become the starter for the Vikings.

Money move for NY

The Giants also get a bit of relief when it comes to Jones' contract as well. They negotiated a piece to his extension that helps them for the rest of this season. Check out the details below.

Daniel Jones' contract with the Giants included offset language against his guaranteed 2024 salary, so any money he gets from a new team would be credited back to the Giants. For that reason, expect Jones' deal with a new team, assuming there is one this season, to be for a prorated portion of the veterans minimum, much like Russell Wilson's deal with the Steelers for this season. … The 2025 injury guarantee that was in Jones' Giants contract does not follow him to his new team. This would be a new deal completely, with no commitment for 2025 or beyond.

Since it is a practice squad deal for Jones, his offset numbers will be lower than originally expected from a new contract outside of New York.

The Vikings will be able to choose if they want to give the former Giants QB a new deal after the season. The only QB they have under contract for 2025 is Rookie J.J. McCarthy.

McCarthy is set to make a full recovery and return to start next season, but Jones could be a great backup option if the opportunity presents itself.

He is auditioning for that role right now, in a way. Let's see how it unfolds for Minnesota.
