NFL Draft intel shows Giants could throw controversial curveball in first round by picking top prospect, but not how you’d expect

The New York Giants are a massive wild-card team with the No. 5 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and they could throw a wrench in the first round by selecting one surprising player after trading back.

The New York Giants are looking to make a splash in the NFC East in their first season under John Harbaugh, and the roster needs a few more improvements to get there.

After an active free agency period, the Giants now have seven picks to work with in the 2026 NFL Draft. The one downside, however, is that they only have two picks in the top-100, and don’t have a third-round pick.

That could change if the Giants trade back from No. 5 overall, which might actually be an option with their latest top-30 visit.

New York Giants scheduled a top-30 visit with OL Spencer Fano

The Giants are doing their homework on draft prospects before they’re on the clock, and even hosting a select few for a top-30 visit. They’ve been linked to top players in the draft already, but the latest one is a surprise. The Giants are hosting OL Spencer Fano for a top-30 visit, which could throw a wrench in the first round.

Fano is one of the top offensive linemen in the NFL Draft, so it’s no surprise the Giants have interest in him, but him going No. 5 overall would be a huge shocker. The Giants would likely trade back if they wanted to take Fano and pass on top talent while collecting more picks.

Should the Giants trade back and take Spencer Fano?

As of now, the Giants are huge favorites to select LB Sonny Styles, and even more so after showing him a lot of attention at Ohio State’s pro day. Taking a LB that high could be controversial enough when premier talent like Carnell Tate and Mansoor Delane is on the board. Trading back a few picks would be ideal for landing another second or third-round pick for the draft to help fill in more needs.

One of those needs is the interior offensive line, and Fano could kick inside and be an elite offensive lineman despite playing tackle in college. Fano is projected to go anywhere from No. 10 to No. 17 overall, so it could be a pretty notable jump, but worth it if Fano is your starting guard for years to come.

Fano has the size to dominate at 6-5, 311 pounds, and he was flawless in pass protection with zero sacks and hits allowed in 2025. He’s also just as effective in the run game and has no real holes in his game other than his controversial arm length, which keeps changing.

The Giants are the one team that can really throw the entire first round of the NFL Draft through a loop, and now we wait and see what happens.
