The New York Giants moved on from tight end Evan Engram last year. It wasn't surprising. Injuries and drop issues plagued his time with New York, so he never hit his full potential as a Giant. it's a much different contract situation with Saquon Barkley now. He is their star running back and has proven his worth in recent seasons. Regardless, both were franchise tagged by their teams earlier in the offseason.
Engram is now with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He and the team agreed with an extension today, just before the deadline for players that are under the tag for this season. The contract actually looks similar to a deal that may work for Barkley and the Giants, too. The three-year deal averages just under $14M per year, and there's $24M guaranteed.
That guarantee number is certainly close to what Barkley is looking for from New York. The issue is that the NFL does not value the running back position to that degree of guarantees very often anymore. If they did, a deal would be done for Saquon. He is a top five player at his position in the entire NFL.
Regardless, if the Giants want to get a deal done with Barkley, Engram's extension with Jacksonville is a great comparison for them to check out.
