The NFL is ever-changing. The New York Giants made a massive decision in recent days when they cut ties with Daniel Jones. He headed to waivers, where a team would have to deal with his contract if they picked him up there.
That wasn't the case by Monday afternoon, though. There's been interest in the quarterback, but that interest gets curbed when money becomes involved.
Daniel Jones clears waivers
According to sources, Jones has cleared waivers. He is now a free agent.
One concept is clear after this process. No other team had any interest in bringing on Jones at the price that he was at with New York. The rest of the NFL seemed to scoff at it, basically.
If someone claims him, the new team absorbs his $11.8 million salary for the rest of the season — which would be extremely helpful for the Giants. But the new team will also have a risk, because Jones is under contract through 2026. There aren't full guarantees left beyond this season, but Jones does have $23 million in injury guarantees for 2025. — Wendell Ferreira
Jones would prefer to sign with a contender, and the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings are both potential landing spots for him, according to Adam Schefter. Jones is not expected to make an immediate decision, though, according to Ian Rapoport.
Since Jones cleared waivers, the Giants are now responsible for the remaining $11 million-plus in guaranteed money on his deal.
As a free agent, whoever adds Jones will get a much better deal than the huge extension that New York signed him to that would have kept him in red and blue until 2026.
Giants rewrite history that makes a major offseason decision look even worse
A horrible stretch of play.
