As the New York Giants prepared for their second preseason game against the New York Jets, they quietly released their second unofficial depth chart.
The most surprising aspect of the new depth chart is that there are no changes. The Giants only had two practices this week, both with the Jets. For that reason, it makes sense why there is no movement.
However, the lack of movement tells us much more than you’d think.
Quarterback
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| Russell Wilson | Jameis Winston | Jaxson Dart | Tommy DeVito |
It is disappointing that Dart has not moved up to the backup quarterback spot after his recent hot streak in training camp and dominant performance against the Buffalo Bills. It does indicate, though, that they may be looking to justify keeping Winston on the roster. If he’s not the backup, keeping a veteran in the mix makes little sense if he’ll never be used. Dart remaining at QB3 feels like a decision to have a veteran to turn to in an emergency and establish that there’s no rush to get him on the field.
Running Back
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Tyrone Tracy Jr. | Devin Singletary | Cam Skattebo | Dante Miller | Jonathan Ward |
The running back room remaining the same isn’t unexpected, with Skattebo still out of the mix with an injury. It is still intriguing to track whether Miller’s preseason impact will help him secure a special-teams role with the Giants.
Wide Receiver
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| Darius Slayton | Jalin Hyatt | Zach Pascal | Juice Wells Jr. | |
| Wan’Dale Robinson | Ihmir Smith-Marsette | Montrell Washington | Dalen Cambre | Jordan Bly/Gunner Olszewski |
| Malik Nabers | Lil’Jordan Humphrey | Beaux Collins | Da’Quan Felton |
There haven’t been any risers amongst the WRs, except for Washington. His productive performance against the Bills and steadiness in practice have been enough to justify him making the roster. Smith-Marsette will likely stick as the team’s return man, but Washington has legitimately challenged him for his role in the slot.
Tight End
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Theo Johnson | Daniel Bellinger | Chris Manhertz | Greg Dulcich | Thomas Fidone II/Jermaine Terry II |
No changes for the tight ends make sense as Johnson and Bellinger’s roles are established. However, it still begs the question of how many tight ends they’ll keep and whether Fidone II can unseat Gulcich after this week. Last year, they only kept three, with Manhertz being the final tight end.
Offensive Line
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | |
| RT | Jermaine Eluemunor | Marcus Mbow | Stone Forsythe | |
| RG | Greg Van Roten | Evan Neal | Jake Kubas | Jaison Williams |
| C | John Michael Schmitz Jr. | Austin Schlottmann | Jimmy Morrissey | |
| LG | Jon Runyan Jr. | Aaron Stinnie | Bryan Hudson | |
| LT | James Hudson III | Joshua Ezeudu | Marcus Mbow |
It’s unlikely that Mbow will jump ahead of someone after his stellar first game, but it does make one wonder if we could see a change anytime soon. If he continues to string together good days, the Giants should let him challenge Hudson III for the sixth offensive lineman role.
Defensive Line
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | |
| DE | Kayvon Thibodeaux | Chauncey Golston | Trace Ford | ||
| NT | Dexter Lawrence II | Elijah Chatman | D.J. Davidson | Jordon Riley | Cory Durden |
| DT | Rakeem Nuñez-Roches | Roy Roberston-Harris | Darius Alexander | Jeremiah Ledbetter | Elijah Garcia |
| OLB | Brian Burns | Abdul Carter | Tomon Fox |
Since we already know the stars among the defensive linemen, the rookie Alexander has drawn the most attention. Alexander has been unimpressive for a typical Day 2 pick. Hopefully, eventually, he can gain momentum, but that may not happen until later in the regular season.
Linebacker
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| Bobby Okereke | Darius Muasau | Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles | |
| Micah McFadden | Chris Board | Dyontae Johnson | K.J. Cloyd |
Ultimately, the linebacker room will be the one position group that won’t change. McFadden and Okereke are studs, and Muasau and Board are solid backups.
Defensive Back
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | |
| NB | Dru Phillips | Nic Jones | TJ Moore | |
| CB | Paulson Adebo | Tre Hawkins III | Art Green | O’Donnell Fortune |
| S | Tyler Nubin | Dane Belton | Makari Paige | |
| S | Jevón Holland | Raheem Layne | K’Von Wallace | |
| CB | Deonte Banks or Cor’Dale Flott | Korie Black | Dee Williams |
The battle for the second outside cornerback position remains at a standstill. Banks has a strong opportunity to establish himself as the man for the job with Flott out of the lineup against the Bills. But a shaky performance and no changes from last week re-establish that Flott has a strong chance at beating him out.
Hopefully, heading into their final preseason game against the New England Patriots, we’ll have significant shakeups to better determine who will make the 53-man roster.
