The New York Giants’ offense was extremely disappointing in their Week 1 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders. After a performance that only generated 231 total yards of offense, many Giants fans are wondering if this could set the stage for rookie Jaxson Dart to replace veteran Russell Wilson at quarterback.

Giants media members were intent on asking head coach Brian Daboll if a change at quarterback was imminent. Following the game, Daboll was asked numerous times if Wilson is still the team’s starting quarterback. Despite being given multiple opportunities to answer the question yes or no directly, Daboll left the door open to a change at QB.

Could Jaxson Dart take over soon?

Giants fans are desperate to have something exciting to latch onto. After an exciting preseason from the rookie Dart, they’re hoping he can be a beacon of hope for the future.

Just one week into the season, it feels like New York’s offense will hold the franchise back from producing a quality season in 2025. The offense was at its usual level of disappointing, with multiple failed scoring opportunities, frustrating penalties, and a nonexistent run game.

Due to the current mental state of a fan base that’s beyond its breaking point, the media was eager to find out if Dart has a shot at starting next week against the Dallas Cowboys. When Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News asked Daboll about whether he’d consider starting Dart next week, Daboll waffled at the question.

“Look, we’re going to get home,” Daboll said. “We’re going to look at our game. Collectively, we’ve all got to do better.”

Daboll was later asked if it was a guarantee that Wilson was the starter. Again, he didn’t provide a direct response.

“We’re just right here after the game,” Daboll added. “I’ve got confidence in Russ. We’ve got to do better around overall. Coaches, players, around, everybody. So, you know, we’ll get focused and ready to go to Dallas.”

Finally, Leonard pointed out that Daboll wasn’t providing a firm answer to the quarterback situation. And once again, Daboll stated they’re going to go back and rewatch the game.

“We’re going to go back. We’ll evaluate the tape. . . this game isn’t on Russell Wilson. It’s not on Russell Wilson. I want to make that clear. So I have confidence in Russ; we’ve got to do a better job all the way around.”

Ultimately, it would be exciting for the franchise if they turned to Dart earlier than anticipated. If the season is going to be filled with sub-250-yard performances, there’s no point in starting a veteran when your first-round rookie appeared ready in the preseason. The way Daboll buys time to stick around next year with a losing record is if Dart plays well and they upset some of the top teams on their schedule.

It feels unlikely they’ll panic and start Dart immediately against the Cowboys. However, the handling of this question is an indicator that they may be willing to do it sooner than initially expected.
