The New York Giants lost starting inside linebacker Micah McFadden early in their 21-6 Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders. There was some hope he’d be able to bounce back soon, but today it was revealed that his injury was severe.

Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, McFadden will be sidelined for an extended period of time due to a foot injury.

Micah McFadden leaves a massive hole in the Giants’ defense

Roughly seven minutes into Week 1, McFadden injured his foot while trying to tackle Commanders running back Austin Ekeler. After the injury, McFadden was placed in an aircast and carted off the field. That’s often enough of an indication that the injury is serious.

While speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Brian Daboll shared that McFadden thought he had broken a bone on the play.

“I think he thought when he was out there laying on the ground,” Daboll told reporters, “he thought he broke his leg. I know he didn’t do that.”

According to USA Today’s Art Stapleton, there was initially optimism that a quick recovery was possible after the X-rays came back negative. However, today’s news establishes that they’ll be without McFadden for an extended period of time.

The loss of McFadden is a brutal one, as he was expected to be an integral piece in the middle of their defense. The Giants’ linebacker unit was considered a reliable group that played effectively behind their talented defensive line.

We saw very quickly on Sunday what his impact was. Without McFadden, the Giants gave up 220 total yards rushing and several huge pass plays over the middle of the field.

Since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, McFadden has been one of the bigger steals of the Giants. In 2023 and 2024, he finished with over 100 total tackles as one of the team’s more consistent players. Additionally, he totalled over 20 tackles for loss in those two years.

The most devastating aspect of this injury is that McFadden was entering the final year of his contract. His future with the team wasn’t guaranteed, as a potentially new front office could come in after 2025. However, another productive year would have earned him a solid payday either with the Giants or a team needing a starting inside linebacker.

Hopefully, McFadden recovers quickly because the Giants need him desperately.
