The New York Giants just made an unexpected roster move ahead of the 4 p.m. deadline that no one saw coming. Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the Giants are releasing hybrid DL/FB Elijah Chatman.

One of the preseason’s most covered and discussed stories was Chatman carving out a role in the defensive line rotation and serving as the team’s fullback. Despite being undersized for a defensive tackle, he found ways to be disruptive in preseason games. He was also listed on the unofficial depth chart as Dexter Lawrence’s backup at nose tackle.

Most importantly, Chatman was enthusiastic about contributing as a fullback. For fringe roster players, occupying multiple roles is the key to making it impossible for a team to cut you. They can use another spot on a less versatile player if you can play two positions.

Chatman’s ability to play fullback made it seem certain that he would be a member of the team, especially because he had a history of playing offense in high school and college. Additionally, the Giants do not have a fullback on the roster, so he was the only player occupying that position.

Several things are now apparent about the Giants’ roster in 2025. They seem to have no intention of retaining a fullback unless they bring in an outsider. It also looks like D.J. Davidson will be Lawrence’s backup at nose tackle.

The significant size difference between Davidson and Chatman may have been the deciding factor. Davidson is listed at 6-5 and 320 pounds, while Chatman is only 6-foot and 278 pounds.

Considering how much praise the Giants coaching staff gave Chatman throughout training camp, it is highly likely that he’ll stick with the practice squad. That is, unless another team is looking for a defensive tackle/fullback hybrid and claims him.
