New York Giants owner John Mara set the tone for the offseason in January when he decided head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen would return for the 2025 NFL season.
Back then, he let the media know he expected results quickly because he had "just about run out of patience"
It’s a tough spot to be in for a franchise with no quarterback in place but on Tuesday, the Giants took a free agency swing that shows how large Mara’s words loom on the organization.
One year removed from allowing Xavier McKinney to walk because of positional value, the Giants are spending big at safety.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants are signing former Miami Dolphins safety Jevon Holland to a three-year deal worth $45 million.
Though Holland’s deal comes at a whopping $15 million average value per year, well over McKinney last year, A to Z Sports’ Dolphins bear writer Craig Smith believes it was a bargain for the Giants.
Giants got a “bargain” deal for Holland
I honestly expected the dollars to come in a little bit higher for Holland here, which makes him leaving Miami a bit more surprising than I would have thought. Everyone around Miami had seemed to expect him to leave, but not at a price that didn't seem completely out of range.
Holland has been one of the steadiest players on the Dolphins' roster since they drafted him in the second round in 2021. He's been reliable on the back end in the passing game as well as against the run. Last year was his lowest year as far as PFF grade (63.0; he had a 90.4 mark in 2023) and it's the first year he didn't have an interception – if anything, that would be one of his shortcomings – the relative lack of takeaways.
However, that being said, the body of work speaks for itself over his career so far, and it's one that makes this deal seem like a pretty darned good bargain for the Giants.
Focus on fixing terrible defense continues
With Holland, the Giants’ theme of the offseason is becoming clearer. The team wants to fix the defense. That’s what they’re desperate for. Holland will join CB Paulson Adebo in the secondary, who signed a $54 million deal himself.
Additionally, the Giants are signing DL Roy Robertson-Harris and DE Chauncey Golston to boost the trenches after fielding one of the thinnest DL groups in the entire league.
