‘Ain’t rocket science’ – Giants’ star Brian Burns issues bold message to his teammates ahead of 2025 NFL season
New York Giants star pass rusher Brian Burns had a strong statement for how the defensive line should perform during the 2025 NFL season.
The New York Giants’ defensive line has the potential to be one of the best in the NFL in 2025. Star pass rusher Brian Burns seems to agree based on what he said after joint practices with the New York Jets today.
“This (expletive) ain’t rocket science, it’s as far as we want to take it. Like, if everybody keyed in doing their job, doing their 1/11. Being detailed in what they need to do. I mean, I feel like the sky is the limit … If we got the mental resiliencey and we stick to the process, we can still take this far.”
Burns doesn’t complicate the potential of the Giants’ DL
Even before drafting Abdul Carter third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Giants’ pass rush was loaded with game-changing talent. Last year, they finished ninth in the NFL with 45 team sacks.
To Burns’ point, now that Carter is in the mix, this group should finish in the top five. If they cannot attain that, it would be because the group is not as locked in and focused as it could be, leading up to their first game.
However, it’s been clear that it should not be a concern. Every practice and their first preseason game against the Buffalo Bills was filled with green flags of this squad being incredibly loaded inside and out.
He also mentioned his collaboration with defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence during his media availability today.
“Just trying to take my game to a level it’s never been. That requires me doing things I never did. I’m working with [Lawrence] quite a bit, talking to Dex a lot. Just how to manipulate body positions, and use my length and power more. Not just my speed and finesse. That’s been good to me so far.”
Lawrence has been one of the most productive interior defensive linemen at sacking the quarterback. Last year, he finished with nine despite only playing in 12 games. A driving force for that production is the blend of power and athleticism that is too difficult for interior offensive linemen to keep up with.
Burns turning to Lawrence for insight should excite Giants fans. The most underappreciated aspect of having so much talent in their defensive line room is the ability for each player to learn from one another.
Burns finished the 2024 season with 8.5 sacks. Hopefully, he and his teammates can take the jump necessary to reach their goals.
