With free agency set to begin in under two weeks, the New York Giants are eagerly awaiting a decision from tight end Darren Waler about his future.
Per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Waller is weighing his options, with retirement being a possibility. At the conclusion of the 2023 season, Waller reportedly told the Giants organization that he is considering retiring. As of this post, he has yet to make up his mind.
New York acquired Waller for a third-round pick in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders last offseason. Injuries haunted Waller in 2023, as they often have throughout his career, missing five games with a strained hamstring. He caught 52 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown on the season.
Waller's talent has always been apparent, and the nine-year veteran has been dominant during different times of his career. He has eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark twice and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020, which was the last time he played a full season.
Waller is under contract through 2026, however N.Y. could save around $14 million if he decides to retire. The Giants have already stated that they have no plans to release him as a salary cap casualty. Losing Waller would a big blow to a Giants' offensive that severely lacks talent, especially at pass catcher.
At 31 years old and having a laundry list of injuries, it may be in Waller's best interest to call it a career. He may be more inclined to continue to play if the Giants were in position to make a deep playoff run, but that's a pretty hard sell. Regardless of what decision he makes, he'll need to do it fast so that N.Y. can begin its search for a new starting tight end.
