When the New York Giants signed quarterback Jameis Winston last week, everyone came away with the same thought: It might not be great, but football in the Big Apple got a little bit more fun.

Objectively, Winston could be the best quarterback the Giants have had since Eli Manning, even if it hurts to admit it. And yet, he might not be the starter when the season kicks off.

That's not only because the Giants hold the No. 3 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft but because they're not quite out on Aaron Rodgers.

According to NFL Network's insider Ian Rapoport, the Giants view Winston as a backup quarterback, which confirms the suspicion many had following the signing.

"The Jameis Winston thing is sort of like, 'we need a backup quarterback,' that to me makes sense, $4 million a year, that is backup quarterback money," Rapoport said Monday on the Pat McAfee Show. "Giants are still in (the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes)."

Though reports have emerged on Rodgers visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers, the fact that he hasn't visited the Giants doesn't mean Joe Schoen's chances of landing the four-time MVP are over.

"As far as I can tell, there hasn't been a visit to the Giants but I know there's been communication there," Rapoport added. "It seems to me he knows what he needs to know."

The NFL insider did add, and so did McAfee, that the visit in Pittsburgh went very well.

But even if the Giants strike out on Aaron Rodgers, Rapoport's insight on Winston confirms what's been made out of the quarterback addition. He's not quite QB1.

Russell Wilson remains an available free agent for New York should they still want to take the veteran quarterback route, something that's very possible considering John Mara's comments earlier in the year about his patience wearing thin. Wilson already visited the Giants

Otherwise, expect the front office to use the No. 3 overall pick on a quarterback as long as Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward are still on the board when they go on the clock.
