After a morning of devastating news, more has come for the New York Giants. The Giants released a statement today sharing that team owner John Mara is battling cancer.

John Mara announces cancer battle

Mara did not provide a lot of information regarding his health situation in terms of severity, but did express that he is optimistic after the diagnosis. He also did not elaborate on how his role with the team may change during his recovery.

Since the Giants franchise was established, Mara’s family has owned the team and played a pivotal role in the NFL’s growth. His grandfather, Tim Mara, founded the team in 1925, and his father, Wellington Mara, controlled the team until 2005. In the franchise’s history, the team has won four Super Bowls, 11 conference championships, and 16 division championships. The Mara family has held control for the second-longest period of any family in NFL history, only behind the Chicago Bears.

Since 2005, Mara has overseen two Super Bowl wins during his tenure as the Giants’ owner during the 2007 and 2011 seasons. Despite some inconsistency lately, the Giants franchise has been one of the most highly regarded and competitive in sports.

Hopefully, Mara has a speedy recovery and his battle with cancer is short-lived.
