The New York Giants are expected to go through some big changes in terms of both the coaching staff and the roster during the offseason and sure enough, they went ahead and fired special teams coordinator, Thomas McGaughey on Monday morning.

McGaughey was one of the only consistent parts of the Giants franchise, up until recently. He had been with the team since 2018, when former Giants head coach, Pat Shurmer, decided to bring him on and was a NFL ST coordinator at three different stops before heading to the Big Apple.

Per Pro Football Focus, the Giants' special teams finished the year with an overall grade of 71.0. That's an above-average grade, but it ranked 23rd out of 32 teams after finishing 25th in 2022. It's obvious there was a decline under the veteran coach and it's a big reason why he was let go.

Giants fire offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, too

Johnson was also on the chopping block and is no longer with the team. The Giants offensive line was a major issue in 2023 and allowed a disgustingly high 85 sacks last year. He was also the offensive line coach in 2022 and he clearly wasn't getting the job done.

Is Wink Martindale next?

Now, the attention turns to defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, thanks to the midseason rumors about his relationship with Brian Daboll. Several reports came out stating that things were breaking down between them and Martindale could be on the outs. Daboll shot that down pretty quickly and Martindale clearly hasn't been fired, yet, but that doesn't mean it's out of the picture.

In my opinion, it'd be a mistake to let him go. The Giants defense was a bright spot for the team and kept it in games a lot of the time. Martindale's scheme is also one of the best in the league and it's effective against modern offenses. And, considering Daboll is entering a make-or-break year, do you want to tear it all down and roll the dice on another DC? Or would you rather make the necessary tweaks to fine-tune the machine and keep building?

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Martindale appears to be safe, but like all things NFL: Time will eventually tell us the next move(s).
